Underwood next MCC president

London: Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced that former England and Kent player, Derek Underwood will be the next MCC President.

His appointment will take effect from October 1 2008. The announcement was made at Lord’s during the MCC’s annual general meeting headed by Mike Brearley, the club President on Thursday.

Underwood has been a member of the club for over 40 years. He was the leading spinner for England and since his retirement, has worked in cricket administration.

Playing in 86 Test matches for his country, Underwood took 297wickets. He also played in 26 One Day Internationals.

In his 24-year county career, he took 1,951 wickets for Kent. He played between 1966 and 1982 and first-class career spanning for over 25 years.

Underwood was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1969.
