FADING GLORY: The National Art Gallery building in the Government Museum, Egmore campus, is in need of restoration. It has currently been declared unsafe.

CHENNAI: The National Art Gallery in the Government Museum, Egmore campus continues to wait for funds for renovation, several years after it was closed to the public.

The building is slowly crumbling, though museum officials are confident that the grant from the Centre would come soon.

A board requesting the public to stay away from the structure as it was unsafe was hung on its large gates some months ago.

Recently, several posts were planted around the flight of stairs that lead up to the building and the structure was fenced off. The fence was put up after some slabs fell, according to the officials.

The initial estimate of Rs.6 crore presented in 2003 has since been revised upward. The building that had initially housed the Victoria Technical Institute completes a century next year.
