L. Srikrishna

CHENNAI: In a breakthrough, the Cyber Crime police, attached to the Central Crime Branch unit, have identified a Nigerian allegedly involved in the online lottery fraud, better known as the New Nigerian scam. He will be soon brought to the city from a Mumbai prison for discreet inquiries.

Following a complaint received from a 40-year-old businessman in Perambur, Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran directed the CCB police to investigate.

According to the complainant, he received an e-mail from U.K. saying he had won a lottery worth 5,00,000 pounds. The “winner” was asked to pay certain taxes which amounted to Rs 1.50 lakh. The businessman remitted the money in a bank account specified in the mail. When even after a month there was no response, the complainant preferred a complaint.
