Panchayat union schools are set to get a facelift

449 works to be taken up at 76 primary and middle schools

A selection panel will finalise the nature of repair works


Tuticorin: The panchayat union schools in the district are set to get a facelift as District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) plans to carry out renovation and repair on an outlay of Rs.74.09 lakh during this financial year.

Official sources told The Hindu that as part of the project, a total of 449 works would be taken up at 76 primary and middle schools situated in select villages spread over 12 blocks. Of the institutions, 13 each were from Pudur and Kayathar blocks, 12 from Karungulam block, 7 from Ottapidaram block, six each from Kovilpatti and Vilathikulam blocks, four each from Srivaikundam, Sattankulam and Udangudi blocks, one each from Alwarthirunageri and Tiruchendur blocks, and five were from Tuticorin block.

Some of the major works to be executed include conversion of asbestos roof into ‘Mangalore tiles’, replacement of damaged tiled roofs, repairs of damaged flooring and painting of black boards, wherever it was necessary.

White washing or colour washing of school buildings would be done if such works were not carried on the respective edifices within last three years.

A selection committee with Block Development Officer (Block Panchayat) as its convener and Panchayat Union Engineer, Assistant Elementary Education Officer (AEEO), head master of the respective panchayat union school, village panchayat president and panchayat ward union member concerned, would finalise the nature of repair works to be carried out in each of the 76 schools.

Based on the report of the committee, the Collector would give the administrative sanction for the works on a priority basis.
