For close to a month now, more than 15 school boys have been striving hard to learn the nuances of hockey at the summer coaching camp at the district stadium in Nagapattinam. The youngsters from various schools in the district are taught the basics of the game by their coach and the physical education teacher of St. Antony’s Higher Secondary School, L. Alexis Pushparaj. “What is pleasing about these youngsters is their willingness to work hard and ability to grasp things quickly,” says Mr. Alexis, who is also the secretary of the Nagapattinam District Hockey Association. He feels the youngsters are a determined lot and have it in them to make it big. “They are putting in a lot of hard work and I am sure it will pay off,” Mr. Alexis adds. Volleyball coachingA good number of school students are getting their basics right at the summer volleyball coaching camp at the District Stadium, Nagapattinam. The boys’ are trained by R. Prasanna, physical education teacher of Natarajan Damayanthi High school. The girls’ practice under the watchful eyes of R. Kanaga, physical education teacher of Thirumarugal Government Higher Secondary School. Majority of the students are beginners and they are taught the fundamentals of the game. For the experienced, specialised training is imparted based on their positions - spikers, blockers. The District Sports Officer I. John Sagayaraj says that the youngsters at the camp are making good progress. Awareness programmeVilluppattu programmes to create awareness among the common people on the ill-effects of child labour problem were held in various parts of Perambalur district recently. The centre and the state governments were taking various initiatives to put an end to the child labour menace and Perambalur district is soon to be declared as child-labour free district. The Thanjavur Kalaimagal Cultural Troupe conducted villupattu programmes in Perambalur, Kurumbalur, Arumbavur, Poolambadi and Labbaikudikadu towns highlighting the need for eradication of child labour for the overall development of the district and the society. The youngsters below the age of 15 years should be positively admitted to schools and those who employed children in their workplaces should be punished, was the message the cultural troupe highlighted. According to the Collector, Anil Meshram similar awareness programmes held all over the district evinced overwhelming response and the people have assured their total support for the campaign. Commendable performanceT. Nalini of Ranee’s Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, has emerged the State topper in Home Science subject in the plus two examinations. She secured 197 out of 200. The performance of Nalini was commended by the Headmaster of the school, R. Bose. He presented books in appreciation of her performance.
