Though the median strip laid on the Medical College Road to reduce traffic congestion during rush hours is a most welcome move by the Thanjavur municipality, the authorities must also see to it that the road safety rules are strictly followed by the people driving on such roads. As most of the people who drive on the road frequently drive on the wrong side, the newly constructed strip, which has been laid actually to ensure a safe and speedy drive has now made the road an accident-prone zone. This issue must be immediately taken into consideration by the authorities and appropriate traffic regulatory measures implemented. Above all, the people who drive must also make it a point that they follow road safety rules themselves so that there is no need for any regulation to be imposed on them. S. Durairajan, Thanjavur Courier service growsCourier service has, of late, grown in multiples and the fees they are changing are abnormally high, the minimum being Rs.15. As the postal department has ignored the unprecedented growth of this sector, it has lost its overall revenue considerably across the country. The department, in order to arrest this unhappy trend in its growth rate, has proposed to curtail the fast spreading wings of courier service by enforcing certain limitations. The same proposal is now put on hold. Will the postal authority come forward to revive the proposal and play a new ball game to compete with the private sector of the courier service offering attractive concession package to the customers. N. Arumugam, Pudukottai Stinking tankThe report “Viralimalai is all set to become a heritage town” (‘The Hindu’ dated May 4, 2008) has rightly brought out the State Government’s concern for developing this heritage town and for its conservation for posterity in the wake of its historical importance. I would like to bring to the notice of the authorities that there is a big tank called Sri Ammankulam in the heart of Viralimalai. One can guage its sanctity and purity from the fact that till a few decades ago, religious rituals associated with the annual temple festival of Sri Subramanyaswamy in Viralimalai were conducted in this tank. But now, it bears a dirty look and has become a source of unhygienic environment. A stink pervades the area due to open defecation and discharge of sewage waters into it. The tank had remained a source of maintenance of groundwater level and re-charging of wells in the vicinity. I request the authorities to pay special attention to maintain the tank. This will promote tourism potential and influx of pilgrims to this heritage town. S. Chandrasekaran, Viralimalai Roads not relaidThe roads in a majority of streets like Taamarai Street, Vennila Street, Manikkavasagar Street, Municipal Colony 7th Street in Municipal Colony have not been relaid even after the completion of the underground drainage works many months ago. This causes much anxiety to local residents and roadusers. I request Thanjavur Municipality to relay these roads immediately. Rubaiba, Thanjavur Irresponsible bus staffRecently, I travelled by a State Transport Corporation point-to-point bus proceeding to Manapparai from Thanjavur. The bus was only half full when it left Thanjavur Bus Stand. Strangely, the TNSTC staff were trying to fill the other regular buses ignoring this non-stop service. The conductor of the non-stop bus too was not taking any interest in taking more passengers. The TNSTC staff should think on how much loss the corporation will be suffering due to this callous attitude. Mohideen Peeran, Thanjavur Sign boards defacedSign boards are put up on National and State Highways indicating the name of destination, distance, etc., to important towns and tourist spots for the information of the travelling public. It serves a very useful purpose. But one finds that such sign boards are defaced by local people by putting up wall posters. The Highways department should take action to remove such obstructions to the sign boards. R. Jambunathan, Tiruthuraipoondi Online complaint system goodThe online complaint system started by Tiruchi city police is a milestone in their achievements. It is easy for the public to lodge a report to the police from the house instead of going to the police station. It is a commendable effort by the police. It will also be useful and convenient to the public if the police in Thanjavur, Papanasam and Kumbakonam follow the same system immediately. Kavi Akbardeen, Pandaravadai Fast disposal of petitionsI admire the Public Grievance Cell, functioning in the District Police Office, Pudukkottai, (The Hindu dated 3-5-08). The petitions received directly at the S.P’s office, petitions made by those who are not satisfied with the action taken at the divisional level and the petitions preferred by those who are not satisfied with the action taken at the local as well as the divisional level seeking the PGC’s intervention are classified as third/second and star one status respectively. Disposals are ensured within three, seven and 15 days and the ‘online monitoring facility’ is best utilised to take up a review by Superintendent of Police P. Moorthy IPS. Indeed, a unique plan, worthy of emulation by the district Collectors/ SPs all over the State. R.S. Moorthy, Karur Avoid night power cutsThe EB can confine its power shutdown to daytime. For the last 2 days, Chettimandapam experienced power cuts from 11 p.m.-12 a.m. and 4 a.m.-6 a.m.. This has disturbed the sleep of people. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
