Government Press posts win

Kayalpatnam: Government Press Football Club, Bangalore, edged past Universal Football Club, Calicut by the odd goal in three to enter the quarterfinals of the 43rd annual Maulana Abulkalam Azad memorial Trophy all-India football tournament at the United Sports Club ground here on Monday.

Government Press went into the lead with a sixteenth minute strike by Wilfred off a square pass from Sethuraman Calicut team pressed hard for the equaliser and it came in the 55th minute, when Riyaz converted a penalty which was awarded for defender Madan handling the ball in side the penalty area.

The Bangalore team scored the winner in the 66th minute. Nirmal, receiving a pass from Sethuraman near the top of the box, went on a solo and placed the ball into the goal, past an on-rushing goalkeeper Noufan.

Government press Football Club will meet last year’s runner-up Tamil Nadu Special Police in the quarter final on Tuesday.
