Condition of city buses

It is sad to note that the city buses are outdated and poorly maintained when compared to the fleet in Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Salem and Tirunelveli. In these places, private operators are also allowed to operate in city routes. These buses are new and well-maintained. As there is a tough competition between private and the STC buses, people of these cities need not have to wait for more than 10 minutes. But the situation in Madurai is entirely different. Most of the city bus es have been categorized as LSS, City Express and deluxe-air buses and they charge heavily and the number of ordinary buses is less. These buses do not halt in bus stops which are located in between stages. Elders and school children in these stops have to wait for an hour or so for ordinary buses. There are many poor people who cannot afford to pay the fare charged in LSS City Express and deluxe-air buses. Hence, I request the authorities to kindly to allow private buses to operate in city routes and increase the number of ordinary city buses.

II

While welcoming the Express Bus Service by skipping two or three stops on city roads to save fuel and increase the revenue, yet this will be effective and foolproof method only by bus drivers.

The drivers should have the control of opening and closing the exit gates only at specified stops and should not allow wayside passengers waiting in bus stops (other than the specified stop) to get into the opening of the exit gates.

The passengers have to get in only through the entrance and exit points controlled by the drivers using swing doors. It is the habit of passengers to get in and exit on both sides. Sufficient manpower may be posted in those stops to prevent this sort of entering on both sides. Hope the transport authorities will look into this aspect.

CM, Ramadoss and schemes

PMK leader Ramadoss’ insistence to impose total prohibition, formulate several schemes for development of crores of people living below poverty line instead of blowing trumpet in inauguration ceremonies of special SEZ and global industries, has been misunderstood by Chief Minister Karunanidhi as opposition to his several free schemes and schemes for development of industries. This is unfortunate and uncalled for. He must pay attention to the suggestions of the opposition in proper perception.

Expedite flyover work

Both sides that approach to the Sellur-Thathaneri level crossing are not in good condition. Heavy traffic is always seen here. Motorists face a lot of inconvenience while passing through the level crossing. It is lamentable to see the construction of a flyover remains standstill for more than three years and no politician has taken up this issue for discussion in the Assembly.

Measures are to be initiated immediately on a war-footing to finish the work early. I appeal to all the authorities concerned to take speedy steps to finish it.

Pat for Treasury Office

Madurai Treasury Office, once a dreaded place, is transformed much to the satisfaction of pensioners by resorting to computer system and orderly functioning for which the Treasury Officer and his staff have to be appreciated. Thanks to the Commissioner, Treasuries, to responding to representations made by the Senior Citizens’ Forum.
