BRILLIANT SHOWPIECE: A view of the facade of Fort St. George, the seat of the State Government, that glows in the newly installed lights imported from Belgium.

CHENNAI: Those who travel down Rajaji Salai at night would be familiar with the quiet elegance of Fort St. George.

The fort, a British architectural marvel, will not be in the dark anymore as for the first time Rs.30 lakh was set apart for lighting up this fort, now the seat of the State government.

The decision follows a recommendation by the Central Government’s twelfth Finance Commission that historical monuments could be decorated with lights in an effort to display their grandeur.

Lights designed in Belgium were imported for the purpose.

On Tuesday evening, the Public Works Department Minister Durai Murugan switched on the lights.
