PUDUKOTTAI: The Viralimalai village panchayat has taken special steps to restore religious sanctity to a local tank, following a pertinent plea by the villagers after the notification of the village by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department as a heritage site.

According to the official sources, the District Rural Development Agency has come forward to contribute its mite for desilting the tank, where the religious rituals associated with the temple dedicated to Lord Subramanyar atop the Virali Hills had been performed decades ago.

With the letting out of the sewage waters into the source, the tank had since got polluted, forcing the temple authorities to dispense with the annual ‘theerthavari’ there.

The issue was taken up during the Grama Sabha meeting when a number of villagers went down the memory lane to describe the religious rituals. They also reminded the officials and the Village Panchayat president G. Leelavathy Ganesan of the significance of the temple in maintaining the ground water-table of the entire village.

“The village panchayat adopted a resolution pleading for funds for the restoration of the sanctity of the tank and the District Rural Development Agency has been chalking out a special scheme for developing it,” an official source told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

The source also said that steps would be taken to set up a parking lot in the vicinity of the temple, in the wake of the anticipated influx of tourists and pilgrims to Viralimalai due to the notification.
