Condition of Nagamma, migrant labourer from Manvi taluk continues to be critical

Labourers are worried about expenses during convalescence

Bangalore: The Labour Department has set up a three-member technical committee to investigate the causes leading to the accident at a Sobha Developers’ construction site on Bannerghatta Road on May 10, in which two workers died and seven others sustained injuries.

Report expected

The report of the committee is expected within ten days and any action by the Labour Department will necessarily be based on the findings, said N.B. Ramachandra, Labour Officer, (Division 6), in whose jurisdiction the accident occurred.

Members

The panel will include a Chief Electrical Engineer from the Electrical Inspectorate and a Chief Engineer from Bangalore South division, besides Mr. Ramachandra.

Work resumes

Work at the accident site, which had come to a standstill, resumed on Thursday after a safety audit.

Workers at the site said that representatives of the construction company had promised to pay them for the fateful day when work was suspended.

Still critical

The condition of Nagamma (30), the migrant labourer from Manvi taluk who was seriously injured in the accident and admitted at K.R. Hospital, continues to be critical.

The doctors said she would have to be kept under observation for two or three more days before she can be declared out of danger, said one of Ms. Nagamma’s attendants.

Uncertain future

While the construction company is currently bearing the expenses of treatment, most workers are unsure how they will eke out a living and support their families while they are convalescing after being discharged from the hospital.

Most workers have suffered multiple injuries and are bound to be out of work for a minimum of six months, said one of the attendants of the injured.
