Corrections and Clarifications

The first paragraph in a report “First flight from BIA on May 23” (May 15, 2008) was “An Indian flight to Singapore will be the first aircraft to take off from the new Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli on May 23.” The corporate communications division of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) clarifies that the name of the airport is Bengaluru International Airport.

The caption of a standalone photograph (May 15, 2008, page 1) titled “Match-winner” was “Power-Packed: Mumbai Indians’ Sanath Jayasuriya strikes Manpreet Goni for a six during his hurricane, 48-ball unbeaten 114 against Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday ….” It should have been Manpreet Gony. (A report in the sports pages, “Jayasuriya ambushes Super Kings”, “Sport”, May 15, 2008, also had the spelling “Goni”.) Manpreet Gony, a right-arm seamer, made his first-class debut for Punjab in 2007-08.

In a column “Out of London” (Op-Ed, May 15, 2008), with the headline “Phone-in TV shows are a scandal”, the penultimate paragraph was “‘Your dress is quite Western,’ they said ruefully. I was wearing jeans and a short-sleeved top … but I was hardly scantily clad. So much for the empowered, modern, young, cool Muslim woman; turns out what the I really wanted was an authentic, well-covered one instead. You see, burkas made good TV,’ she wrote.” It should have been “‘… turns out what the BBC really wanted was an authentic, well-covered one instead. You see, burkas made good TV,’ she wrote.”

It is the Lady Willingdon (Women’s) College of Education in Chennai. The name appeared as Lady Wellington College in a Chennai report headlined “Teachers’ education varsity planned” (May 15, 2008), because it was so mentioned in the Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University Bill, 2008, introduced in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 14.

The caption of a standalone photograph “Colours of Nature” (Coimbatore, May 15, 2008, page 2) was “Pleasant Sight: A butterfly sucking honey from a flower in Tirupur.” It should have been nectar. Honey is sweet, sticky yellowish-brown fluid made by bees and other insects from nectar collected from flowers. Nectar is a sugary fluid secreted within flowers.
