Fighting win for Silver Jubilee SC

Periakulam: Host Silver Jubilee Sports Club, trailing 26-34 at the end of second quarter, rallied brilliantly to defeat Breeze Basketball Club, Dindigul 68-63 in extra-time, in the inaugural match of the Jeppiaar College of Engineering 49th annual Chidambara Sourya Narayanan memorial Trophy all-India basketball tournament at Periakulam on Thursday.

Dindigul did well to lead but in the third quarter the host bounced back with Manicka Muthu and Vikram Das, finding the hoop accurately and went into a 6-point lead (42-36).

The fourth quarter saw the lead changing often before the teams were level at 54-all at the end of regulation time and in the extra-time host won 68-63.

The results: Silver Jubilee SC 68 (Manicka Muthu 15, P. Vikram Das 15) bt Breeze BC, Dindigul 63 (Jegadeshan 17, M. Nirmal Britto 11).

HDC makes merry

Hockey Development Centre, Vadipatti posted an emphatic 5-0 victory over Ramanathapuram District Hockey Association XI in the opening match of the 11th annual Kothaiammal memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament, organized by Ever Great Hockey Club at Vadipatti near Madurai on Thursday.

Rajapandi 2 (20th minute and 42nd), Vellaichamy (51st), Nagendran (60th) and Durai (62nd) scored. — Sports Correspondent
