Actor Zohra Segal is ‘Ladli of the Century’

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit conferred a special “Ladli of the Century” award on nonagenarian actor Zohra Segal at a function here on Thursday.
After presenting the UNFPA-Ladli National Media Awards for Gender Sesitivity-2007 to people from the media, advertising and films, the Chief Minister said her government had launched the Ladli scheme in the Capital to support families of girl children whose earnings were less than Rs.1 lakh per year. “Under the scheme, girls would receive Rs.1 lakh after finishing their Class XII. I want to thank S.V. Sista of Population First whose campaign for saving the girl child in the media inspired me to launch the campaign here.”
Speaking on the occasion, Bollywood actor Lara Dutta said: “I was appointed the goodwill ambassador of the UNPF after I was crowned the Miss Universe in 2000. At that time I was only 21. Now I have grown up as a person and have been involved in the UN’s campaign against the declining sex ratio. This issue is frighteningly important and I must say that actor Zohra Segal who has a tremendous body of work continues to inspire us. Even at this age she climbed the stage and sang inspiring and heart-rending poetry.”
Mr. Sista said the quality of the entries was encouraging and gender sensitivity would soon be established as an inalienable value for the media and communication professionals. The winners of the UNFPA-Ladli National Media Awards for Gender Sesitivity-2007 included Shimit Amin who directed “Chak De”; Siby Kattampally of Malayalam Manorama for best investigative reporting and Ruksh Chatterjee of CNN-IBN for best news feature.
