Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has asked the Minister for Higher Education, to clarify whether engineering colleges can admit students to some of the courses that Anna University, Coimbatore, had instructed its affiliate colleges not to conduct them. In a memorandum, the secretary of the organisation, K. Kathirmathiyon, said that Anna University, Coimbatore, had instructed the colleges affiliated to it not to conduct the following courses: B.Sc. Applied Sciences (Computer Technology, Information Technology, Software Engineering); M.Sc (Computer Technology, Information Technology, Software Engineering) and B.C.A., from the academic year 2008-2009 onwards. A resolution was passed by the Senate during April 2008. According to it, the university would not give affiliation to these courses offered in institutions approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The intention seems to be that the engineering colleges should offer only AICTE-approved courses. Contrary to the instructions by the university, engineering colleges were now admitting students for these courses. Though the university was approached for a clarification, it did not obliged. UrgentSince the matter was important that required urgent attention to protect the students, the Government should clarify the correct position. The consumer body has sent copies of the memorandum to the Secretary to Government for Higher Education and the Director of Technical Examinations, Chennai. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
