Henry Austin laid to rest

KOCHI: The body of former Union Minister and Congress leader Henry Austin, who died on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram, was laid to rest at the Infant Jesus Church cemetery here on Friday evening.

The body was brought from the State capital in the afternoon and kept at the DCC office here for the people to pay their tributes. It was then taken to his house here and later to the church where Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman led the ceremonies. Archbishop Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil and Daniel Acharuparambil, Archbishop of the Varapuzha Archdiocese, led the ceremonies at the late leader’s house.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan, CPI (M) leader M.M. Lawrence, MPs, MLAs and a large number of people participated in the funeral ceremony which began at 6 p.m.

Special Correspondent writes from Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday paid homage to the departed leader Henry Austin when his body was brought to the Indira Bhavan in the capital.

Mr. Chennithala, Congress Working Committee member K. Karunakaran, Mr. Chandy, former KPCC president Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, KPCC office-bearers, senior leaders V.M. Sudheeran, M.M. Hassan were among the prominent persons who were present to pay their homage.

RSP State secretary V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai, Human Rights Commission member S. Varghese, and KTDC Chairman Cheriyan Phillip were among the others who paid tributes to Austin.

Education Minister M.A. Baby, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, and Law Minister M. Vijayakumar paid their last respects to Austin at his residence in the city.
