“BJP misguiding citizens over property tax”

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, J.K. Sharma, has accused senior Bharatiya Janata Party members of “misguiding citizens as well as property tax payers”. In a statement released jointly by Mr. Sharma and Vasant Kunj councillor Rakesh Rajora on Friday, the Congress leaders said the BJP had increased the rates of property tax on rented and commercial properties.

“The age of rebate for senior citizens was increased from 60 years to 65 years while the rebate on property tax for plots up to 200 square metres was reduced to 100 square metres. These resolutions were passed at the meeting of the civic body. How can the BJP withdraw these proposals by a statement before the media or anticipatory approval when these rates had been enforced from April 1, 2008,” asked Mr. Sharma.

The Congress leaders alleged that the BJP had passed these rates and now wanted to withdraw them without attracting undue attention. Ideally the rebate proposals should be brought before the House and the Assessor and Collector should withdraw his orders in this regard, they added.

Mr. Sharma further clarified that these rebates were proposed by the Hardship and Anomaly Committee and the civic body had approved them. The orders will deprive the property tax payers of various benefits and hence they should be withdrawn immediately. All rebates announced by the BJP should first be placed before the Corporation for approval, he demanded.
