Bright future for rural BPOs: expert

HYDERABAD: Future looks very bright for the rural BPO (business process outsourcing) industry, for they are no longer just data entry units, according to Kiran Karnik, former Chairman of NASSCOM.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were playing a major role in taking the BPO industry to rural areas. While 50 rural BPOs with about 3,000-4,000 working in them, some of them were taking up outsourced work as complicated and complex as data analytics. Next two to three years would see a boom in the rural BPO sector, Mr. Karnik said here on Friday.

Delivering the key-note address at ‘Jyotismay’, the first national conference on rural BPOs, organised by Byrraju Foundation, Mr. Karnik said it was conceptually wrong to set up simple facilities sans frills. The rural BPOs should be world class from day one. They should be of the same quality as those in the cities. It should not be treated as a corporate social responsibility initiative. Some key managers working in big cities need to go to the villages. Even the technology should be more sophisticated than what was applied to such units in cities. M.N. Rao, M.D of Tata Business Support Services, also spoke.
