Job-oriented courses need of the hour

The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed to accord permission to open 11 government degree colleges in various parts of the State during the forthcoming academic year.

Out of these 11 colleges, the government has decided to establish five in Telangana region and the remaining in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions.

The sanction of new degree colleges is certainly a timely decision, since majority of the rural poor students are still devoid of free access to higher education. In this context, I wish to point out two important issues. Before sanctioning new colleges, the government should initiate steps to close down uneconomical colleges and sanction job-oriented courses in the new colleges.

Solve pollution, water problems

The citizens of Eluru town have been longing for pure drinking water and pollution-free environment. Despite several proposals for various schemes being announced frequently by leaders of various political parties, the two basic needs of the town are yet to see the light of the day.

Shortage of drinking water is being experienced in every summer. Drainages in One Town area continue to overflow every now and then creating inconvenience to the public. I request the officials concerned to take the necessary steps to sort out these two issues.

No facilities at temple

Swami Ayyappa temple located in Tummagunta village of Vidavalur mandal of Nellore district is a famous pilgrimage centre in the district.

Local devotees often call the temple as ‘Sabarimala of Andhra’. Ironically, there are no basic facilities at the temple, particularly for those who come from distant places.

Though the Endowments Department is maintaining the temple, there is no action from the department so far to develop it. We request the Tourism Minister, who hails from Nellore district, to take the necessary steps to improve facilities at the temple, so that Tummagunta can become one of the major tourist attractions in the district.

Re-think about move on new varsities

There is a need to review the proposal to set up six universities in the State during this year and seven more in the coming years.

The existing universities and colleges are not equipped with basic facilities.

Many colleges depend on contract lecturers to complete the teaching of the syllabus in time, as there is no recruitment of lecturers for the past few years.

As the State government is facing fund crunch, it may not be possible for it to set up new universities with required facilities.

Instead of going in for new universities, it is better for the government to focus on introducing new post-graduate courses in the existing colleges.
