We appreciate the Commissioner of Police for giving a serial number to each auto along with the name of police station under which it comes. This will facilitate the users to make a complaint and identify the auto in case of any incident, accident or crime. In this connection, I would like to bring to the notice of the authorities a few other important issues for taking appropriate action like the auto drivers stopping suddenly whenever they like during peak hours to take commuters, causing pollution due to smoke and sound, and not plying on meters. Auto drivers should be insisted to wear uniform and display ID cards. K. Satyanarayana Visakhapatnam ‘Yatras’ for whomAre yatras – ratha or pada – for the people? They have already proved to be sophisticated and innovative plot to cheat gullible electorate. The indulgence of political leaders in spewing fire at their adversaries itself bears enough testimony to the very fact they are out and out for nothing but power and pelf. The erstwhile magic of ‘hi-tech’ fancies and the present contractual execution of irrigation projects, brutal abolition of the urban land ceiling Act and leaving displaced persons in lurch are adequate instances of self-seeking planned programmes of the men in power and their coteries. The Act on land ceiling was brought out by the then exemplary statesmen to create parity between the opulent and the poor and ensure social justice and a welfare State. The sale of vast government lands for SEZs is only further widening the gulf between the rich and the poor. The yatras are not for ‘mee kosam’ but, for `maa kosam’. N.V. Rama Rao Visakhapatnam Public toiletsI have written a letter to the Commissioner of GVMC with a proposal that on this World Health Day, GVMC may launch a massive programme of constructing toilets, urinals and introduce mobile toilets in the GVMC area. This is very urgent and without such a facility, people are helplessly resorting to open defecation and urination. While this may be practised by the males, the females will have to suffer more. This scheme may be implemented with participation by philanthropists. We are sure that Vizagites will not lag behind with many willing to come forward. We suggest that a special corpus fund purely contributed by the public may be credited for this purpose. GVMC may take the help of national and international experts on public health and sanitation to maintain such facilities in the city. Let us all join hands to make the city free from this kind of practice of open defecation and urination, and make this a model. The scheme may be called `Visarjana’. C.S. Rao Visakhapatnam Kudos to GVP studentsKudos to students of Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering, who made the solar car using technical innovation. They can do well to make more such useful things for domestic use like dish washers and other appliances for the common man. K. Sri Rama Murthy Vizianagaram © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
