Srinagar: A self-styled battalion commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Tuesday. Abdul Rehman alias Zia, a resident of Pakistan, was killed by the troops in the Kuta Satri forest, an Army spokesman said. The security forces had laid surveillance and ambush in the forest areas to track suspected militant movement. Around 5.30 a.m., suspicious movement was noticed by the troops and on being challenged, a militant opened fire in an attempt to escape. Zia was killed in retaliatory fire. — PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
