Breakthrough?: Deputy SP Ramnath with Madduleti Naidu, prime accused in the Venkatappa Naidu murder case, after his surrender in Kurnool on Tuesday. KURNOOL: Madduleti Naidu, prime accused in the sensational murder of Venkatappa Naidu, surrendered before the police here on Tuesday. Accompanied by his lawyer, Naidu and two other accused -- Yogeswara Naidu and Arjun -- walked into the office of Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramnath and declared their decision to surrender. Madduleti and Yogeswara figure as accused in the First Information Report (FIR), but the involvement of Arjun is yet to be verified. “We do not know why the man (Arjun) has claimed himself to be a part of the team,” the DSP said. Earlier, the trio went to the Superintendent of Police, who directed them to surrender before the Deputy SP. Mr. Ramnath said the surrendered persons would be arrested only after the inquiry establishes their role in the offence. Madduleti Naidu, however, denied his involvement in Venkatappa Naidu’s murder saying he was implicated by Telugu Desam leaders. He said he decided to surrender to fight a legal battle because the police were subjecting his family members and relatives to harassment to know his whereabouts. Meanwhile, there was a flutter following reports that country bombs hidden in a haystack at Laddagiri, native village of Congress MP Kotla Jayasurya Prakasa Reddy, had exploded. Catches fireMr. Ramnath and other officers who visited the spot dismissed the report saying the haystack caught fire two days ago and there was no trace of explosion. Kurnool police have come under criticism by the families of the victims for what they dubbed a “surrender drama”. They said there was no truth in the claim of the police that they were hunting for Madduleti Naidu as he could freely roam in Kurnool city for two hours before his surrender. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
