Location chosen for Sivaganga medical college

Staff Reporter

SIVAGANGA: Even as people of Karaikudi and surrounding areas hope that the government will set up the proposed medical college at Karaikudi, Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal has scotched the speculation and even indicated the exact location at Sivaganga.

He told The Hindu that after a review of the land available at various places in and around Sivaganga, it was decided that the large tract of unused land at the Raja Duraisingam Government Arts College should be chosen to locate the college.

An area of 25 acres was enough for establishing the medical college.

Since the Government Arts College had a large area of land, there wouldn’t be any problem in acquiring 50 acres.

Land acquisition

Mr. Bansal said he was in touch with officials of the Directorate of Collegiate Education for land acquisition.

Asked whether there was any move to set up the college at Karaikudi, he said there was no such plan.

They expect the medical college will fuel the growth of Sivaganga, which remains backward even over 20 years after it was made the headquarters of Sivaganga district.
