Letters to the Editor
The article “Kidneys aren’t for burning; nor are eyes, hearts and livers” (May 22) was interesting, educative and informative. Even while making funeral arrangements, the relatives of the dead should ensure, without wasting time, that their wish of donating organs is fulfilled. G. Kameswaran, Chennai Thanks to The Hindu for publishing three excellent articles by Dr. M.K. Mani on organ donation. There is need to increase the reach of these articles by publishing them in all Indian languages. Documentaries on the subject could be made in different languages, so that the viewers understand the necessity of donating organs. Unfortunately, bodies are not treated with respect in our medical institutions. I was once horrified to see the way they were kept in a medical college. Also, many doctors are not aware of the facts related to organ donation. They need to upgrade themselves by reading more on the subject. Lastly, most people in India die in their homes and not in hospitals. Introduction of mobile operation theatres could be the answer to retrieve organs from such donors. H.K.
