New Delhi: Samaresh Jung shot a 578 out of 600 to take the 20th place from among 110 shooters in the air pistol event of the World Cup at Munich that concluded on Wednesday. The Commonwealth Games champion and the Olympic quota holder Samaresh had rounds of 94, 97, 96, 96, 97 and 98, as he missed the final by four points. In the men’s free rifle 3-position event, Gagan Narang, the air rifle finalist, shot a 1159 to take the 38th place in a field of 79. Gagan started with a 397 in prone, but rounds of 382 in standing and 380 in kneeling scotched his hopes of a place in the final by 10 points. In fact, Sanjeev Rajput did slightly better than Gagan, as he took the 27th place with a 1161, following rounds of 395, 385 and 381. Equally, there was not much cheer for the Indian camp in the women’s section, as Harveen Srao shot a 378 for the 39th place in air pistol. She had rounds of 94, 96, 95 and 93. A bad start and a weak finish meant that she was six points away from making the final. In the MQS section, Rachna Govil shot an impressive 376. She could have done much better but for a bad third card in a series of 95, 96, 90 and 95. Anjali Bhagwat shot a 570 in women’s 3-position event to take the 42nd place. Tejaswini Sawant had a 571.
