Ensure quality in canal bund works: Collector

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi has instructed engineers of the Irrigation Department to strictly adhere to quality norms in the strengthening and modernisation of the Godavari canal bunds. People living on the river banks would be in danger if the bunds are not properly reinforced. In such an eventuality, stringent action would be taken against derelict officials.

At a review meeting here, Mr. Dwivedi said the Godavari canal bund works were being taken up in a span of 430 km at a cost of Rs. 530 crores. Every care should be taken to get the works done according to specifications lest the funds should be wasted and people face hardships thereafter. The modernisation of Godavari eastern delta was a massive project which should have no room for misuse of funds and deviation from the guidelines pertaining to execution. “It has to be ensured that the problem of submergence of low-lying areas during floods does not recur after the modernisations works are completed,” he said.
