Indoor stadium to be set up in Tiruvarur

TIRUVARUR: Steps will be taken to establish an indoor sports stadium in Tiruvarur, said T.P.M Maideen Khan, Minister for Sports and Environment here on Friday.

After inspecting the stadium at Tiruvarur, he told presspersons that the indoor stadium would be established with Government funds and contributions from the people. A sum of Rs.1 crore each has been allotted for establishing indoor stadium at Tirupur and Tirunelveli.

He said that the Government has been giving importance to rural sports. Play grounds and sports centres would be established under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi scheme. The sport that was popular in each village was being identified and Rs.2 lakh was being given for its improvement.

In Edamelayur village in Tiruvarur district, volleyball was found to be famous and a sum of Rs.2 lakh was allotted for a volley ball court.

He said that yoga training was being given importance and asked the District Sports Officer, P. Gandhi, to organise yoga classes in each Assembly constituency. He also said that a separate track should be laid for walking in the main stadium at Tiruvarur.
