49 development works on in Karur district

KARUR: A total of 49 development works have been taken up under the Namakku Naame scheme at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.07 crore in Karur district. People’s contribution to the scheme constitutes Rs. 35.94 lakh, according to District Collector T.N. Venkatesh.

Mr. Venkatesh said that during 2007-08 under the scheme two works in Karur Panchayat Union, 13 in Thanthoni Union, four in Aravakurichi Union, 13 in K. Paramathi Union, one work in Kadavur Union, two in Kagithapuram Town Panchayat, one work each in Puliyur, Aravakurichi, Marudur, Nangavaram, Krishnarayapuram, Pazhaya Jayamkondam Town Panchayats, and another work in Thanthoni Municipality have been taken up.

In addition, one work has been taken up through the Buildings Wing of the Public Works Department and three others through the River Conservancy Division of the same department have been progressing, Mr. Venkatesh added.

Construction of fair price shops, bus shelters, community halls, drainage, cement roads, black topping of roads, development of parks, establishing street lights, constructing library buildings, and donating computers and sports equipment to schools have been taken up, he said.

Public and philanthropists should contribute to the scheme, the Collector said.
