Thiruvananthapuram wins title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram retained the overall title in the State junior and sub-junior aquatic meet which concluded at the Water Works swimming pool here on Sunday.

Thiruvananthapuram, which won the junior title (group I and group II) with 931 points and the sub-junior title (Group III, IV and V) with 580 points, finished with 1,511 points for the overall title. Ernakulam, which finished second in both junior and sub-junior sections with 350 points and 321 points respectively, came second with 671 points. Thrissur emerged third with 303 points.

The Orison sisters were the toast of the final day’s competition. Riya, the champion in girls’ group II category, broke Sumy Cyriac’s 11-year-old record in 50m freestyle. Riya clocked 0:31.24s to sink Sumy Cyriac’s (0:31.25) set in 1996

Reeta Orison, the individual champion in girls group III category, broke a nine-year-old in girls 50m freestyle. Reeta erased Sony Cyriac’s 1999 mark (0:32.02) by clocking 0:32.68s for the gold. Apart from this, four other records were set on the final day. C.Lal Krishna (400m freestyle group I), R.L.Arun Kumar (50m breast stroke group II, M.Thoufeek (400m freestyle group II) and A.A.Archa (50m butterfly group III) were the swimmers who figured in the record books.
