Police firing, curfew in Assam town

Guwahati: One person was killed and 11 others were injured in police firing at Krishnai in lower Assam’s Goalpara district on Sunday.

Curfew has been clamped at Krishnai to prevent a communal flare-up.

The police said they resorted to the firing as a crowd attacked them and turned violent.

District Deputy Commissioner Utpolnanda Sharma told The Hindu that the crowd, which gathered two km away from the Krishnai police station demanding the release of some arrested persons, turned violent.

Police officials injured

Several officials and police personnel were hurt in stone throwing.

The police claimed that the crowd had put up road blockades and even tried to physically obstruct Deputy Inspector-General (Western Range) K.P. Singhdeo from going out.

The agitators were demanding that about 50 persons, who were arrested in connection with torching houses, be released unconditionally.
