Demonstrations in different parts of Delhi

NEW DELHI: Protest demonstrations were held in different parts of the Capital on Tuesday by various organisations in support of the demands of the Gujjar community in Rajasthan.

The All-India Gurjar Sangharsh Maha Sabha has threatened to hold a “chakka jam” in the National Capital Region on Thursday if their demands are not met.

Members of the Delhi Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Dalit Sena organised a demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding immediate dismissal of the Vasundhara Raje Government and imposition of President’s Rule in the State. The protesters torched an effigy of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Addressing the gathering, LJP national general secretary S.N. Singh condemned the killing of Gujjars in police firing in Rajasthan and said the law and order situation in the State had badly deteriorated. In a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil the party has urged that Scheduled Tribe status be granted to the Gujjar community.

Mr. Singh also demanded a compensation of Rs.10 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the police firing and a CBI inquiry into the firing. “Those found responsible should be booked on charges of murder,” he said.

Delhi Pradesh LJP president Dalip Valmiki said the nationwide protests would be intensified in case the demands are not met.

The Gujjar community members under the aegis of the All-India Gurjar Sangharsh Maha Sabha blocked traffic on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road for about two hours near Khanpur village in South Delhi. Led by Maha Sabha president Phirey Singh Gurjar, the protesters gathered around 10 a.m. in support of the demands.

At Anand Vihar in the Capital’s trans-Yamuna area, a group of protesters blocked traffic for some time but were later dispersed by the police.
