RAMANATHAPURAM: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State Government to announce a special package to develop backward districts such as Ramanathapuram and Dharmapuri. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, C. Mahendran, its deputy secretary, said that seven or eight districts in the State were lagging behind in all aspects of development. The Government should constitute a body to study to list out most backward districts and find the reasons for it. Based on its recommendations, a comprehensive package should be announced to create necessary infrastructure and conducive atmosphere for starting industries. The package could be on the lines of the Cente’s package to north-eastern States. In spite of a series of agitations by the Left parties against inflation, the Centre failed to arrest it. Spiralling prices had affected all sections of people. Though it was true that international crude oil price had increased, prices of petrol and diesel was cheap in Pakistan and Bangladesh than in India. It was because of the wrong tax structure. Hence, the Cente must take steps to arrest price rise failing which the Congress party would have to face the wrath of people. The CPI would conduct a State-level conference in July at Madurai to press the demand of free house sites for all. The Government was denying the rights of people by projecting court directions. Thus, a special Act could be promulgated to make necessary changes to pave the way for distributing pattas to all. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
