Plastic traders want recycling units to curb raw material prices

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Pondy Plastic Manufacturers and Merchants Association has urged the State government to encourage recycling industries to curb the increase in raw material prices and ensure a pollution-free environment.

At a press conference, association president G. Sankaran said the government should exempt the reprocessed plastic granules from tax and start an integrated petrochemical complex either at Ennore or at Cuddalore as indicated in the new industrial policy.

On the rise

Claiming that the demand for plastic articles was on the rise, Mr. Sankaran said 8,000 registered units were functioning in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory. He attributed the rise in the raw material prices to the irregular supply from the north.

Tamil Nadu alone needed 10 lakh tonnes of finished products.
