Temperature likely to drop in the days to come

CHENNAI: For city residents reeling under the sweltering heat, there may be something to cheer about as the maximum temperature is likely to decrease in the coming days.

On Friday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius, which was slightly above the average temperature of 37 degree Celsius.

At Meenambakkam, the maximum temperature stood at 39 degrees Celsius.

Peak summer over

However, Meteorological Department officials said the peak summer days have come to an end.

The temperature is likely to drop in the coming days. The onset of southwest monsoon in the neighbouring States, which is expected in the coming week, would have its impact on the mercury level in the city.

The Nungambakkam observatory recorded 42.1 degrees Celsius on three consecutive days from May 15, the highest so far this month.

The highest maximum temperature recorded at Meenambakkam so far this month was 42.3 degrees Celsius on May 16.

The Meteorological Department forecasts a partly cloudy sky and possibility of thundershower during evening or night on Saturday. The maximum temperature would be around 38 degrees Celsius.
