Indian men win gold

KOLKATA: India won the recurve men’s team gold medal at the third Meteksan World Cup archery competition at Antalya (Turkey) on Friday, getting the better of Malaysia 218-215.

The team, consisting of Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh Champia and Jayanta Talukdar, held its nerve to recover from an early deficit.

The team gold, first ever in a World Cup, was possible owing to Banerjee’s form throughout the championship.

Among the three, he got the maximum of 78 points in the final from eight arrows allowed to each archer.

Champia contributed 71 and Talukdar 69.

India’s last hope of collecting a bronze medal from the men’s individual recurve section was dashed by 2006 World Cup winner Park Kyung-Mo. The Korean won 111-110 against Rahul Banerjee on the final arrow.The Indian women’s team, consisting of Dola Banerjee, L. Bombayla Devi and Reena Kumari, lost to Japan in the first round 191-193 at the Antalya meet.
