‘Tighten laws to stop project delays’

Thiruvananthapuram: Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran, on Saturday, highlighted the need for stringent legal provisions, including imprisonment, to avoid costly delay in implementation of infrastructure development projects.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar organised by the Action Council for Capital Region Development (ACCREDT), he said only stern action would guarantee timely completion of projects.

“Most major development projects in the State have been plagued by corruption and heavy cost and time overruns,” he said.The Minister said the creation of satellite centres was crucial to the development of the capital city.

Inaugurating the activities of the action council, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the first phase of the international deepwater container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam would become operational in three years.

President of Accredit K.K. Cherian presided. Vice-president G. Suresh Kumar, general secretary B. Sasidharan Pillai, Housing Board Chairman M. Rahamathullah, the former Ports Secretary K. Sivarajavijayan and the former Chief Secretary Babu Jacob spoke.
