DGP’s Narsipatnam visit gives rise to speculation

Special Correspondent

Yadav holds meeting with top police officials of the region

DGP may have discussed arrangements for public hearing on alumina refinery

In the last fews weeks police stepped up surveillance in the five affected villages

VISAKHAPATNAM: Director General of Police S.S.P. Yadav visited Narsipatnam on Tuesday and held discussions with some top officials of his department for about five hours at the place considered as gateway to Visakha agency.

Visit of DGP or the tour schedule is seldom announced in advance due to security reasons, but Mr. Yadav conferring with Additional DG (intelligence) Aravinda Rao, DIG of SIB Sivadhara Reddy, IG (Andhra Region) Satyanarayan, along with DIG (Visakha Range) Sandeep Shandilya and Superintendent of Police Akun Sabharwal led to a lot of speculation in the background of strong opposition to the Government’s determined moves to take up bauxite mining in the Visakha agency and setting up of alumina refineries in Makavarapalem mandal near Narsipatnam and S. Kota mandal in Vizianagaram district.

It may also be recalled that on May 28, the police killed four CPI (Maoist) members and lost one Greyhound Head Constable in an encounter near Gunukurayi village in G.K. Veedhi mandal. Bodies of the Maoists are still lying in the mortuary of the Narsipatnam Area Hospital but Mr. Yadav did not examine them but spent the whole time in a meeting with his officials.

The DGP must have discussed the situation in the area as the Maoist party was still having some cadre in the agency and was involving in some incidents occasionally. The Government could expect a lot of problems from the CPI (Maoist) if it is keen to go ahead with the bauxite mining by the year-end. Hence it is imperative that the Maoists must be eliminated from the area so that the bauxite mining could be taken up without much problem. Mr. Yadav must have discussed this issue with officials.

The presence of Mr. Aravinda Rao and Mr. Sivadhara Reddy gave raise to speculation that what Mr. Yadav discussed was very important.

The DGP must have also discussed the arrangements for the public hearing on Makavarapalem alumina refinery to be held on June 7.

Most of the opposition could be expected from the CPI (M) and CPI as the ruling party and even the main opposition Telugu Desam were quiet now.

For the last few weeks the five affected villages are experiencing police surveillance which is increased now.

More bandobust in the area is being planned on June 6 and 7.

In the evening, a press release from the office of SP that Mr. Yadav visited the office of Assistant S.P. at Narsipatnam as part of routine inspection of work of IPS officers.

Mr. Yadav appreciated the work of ASP K.T. Rana and presented him an award.
