In newspapers and electronic media we come across ghastly road accidents wiping out entire families. No one including the Government owns the responsibility. They confine themselves by announcing just compensations. Drivers are at fault for these accidents. Over speeding, bad roads, dazzling head lights and utter disregard to the traffic rules are the main culprits. Only a strong measure both by Police and Road Transport authorities alone can bring in the remedy. Erring drivers should face corporal punishments, cancellation of the permits, prosecution of owners of buses and lorries, along with heavy punishment can be contemplated. Police and Road Transport officials should be made responsible for accidents. This move alone will make them enforce law. G. Ranganathan, Salem. Road accidentsFrequent road accidents occur when those who celebrate functions prefer to erect `pandals’ and bill boards even in the middle of the road. At a recent function in the city, a massive pandal was erected at Asthampatti roundtana, which effectively obstructed the view of road signals at the junction, thus endangering the lives of vehicle users. The irony here is that both District Collector and Police Commissioner cross this traffic junction daily to reach their houses in Yercaud Road. In future who ever wants to erect bill boards, should avoid doing so in the middle of road and causing inconvenience to the road users. Officials concerned should also take stringent action in this regard. P. Bomman, Salem. Night trainSouthern Railway should introduce an exclusive night express train between Coimbatore and Bangalore. People won’t mind shelling out extra fare for a night train facility in this sector. All omni buses and super deluxe buses running in the night in this sector are full even on ordinary days, leave alone in weekends or on holidays. G. Chandrasekaran, Udu0malpet. Headlight problemAlmost all vehicle drivers in the night do not dim and dip headlights causing inconvenience to those coming from the opposite direction. Authorities concerned should enforce regulations strictly to avert accidents. G.N. Devaraj, Erode. SIPCOT complexA year ago the government had announced establishment of a new SIPCOT complex in Dharmapuri. But so far there has been no sign of that. Even land for the complex has not been acquired. Will the government take steps to establish it? Will the people of Dharmapuri be able to see this town as an industrial town? V.S. Sudhakar, Dharmapuri. Platform ticketsEarlier platform tickets used to be sold at the cloak room counter in the Coimbatore railway station. Now they are issued at the ticket counters. It is very difficult to purchase the platform tickets owing to heavy rush and long queues at the ticket counters. It will greatly help the public if the authorities arrange to issue the platform tickets by some other arrangements. S. Balasubramanian, Coimbatore Migrant workersDespondency and helplessness are writ large on the faces of the immigrant workers whose photo appears in The Hindu (May 7, Page 10). Their plight is pathetic. “If there is a single person without food, let us destroy the world,” thundered poet Subramania Bharati (Thani oruvarukku vunavillaiyenil, jagathinai azhithiduvom). But this is still a distant dream. The feasibility of supplying such indigent workers with temporary family (ration) cards can be considered to enable them to draw rations from the PDS which will help them to a considerable extent. S. Venkatachalam, Coimbatore. Fuel price hike Everyone knew that the fuel price hike would come into effect from the midnight of June 4. Almost all petrol outlets in the city refused to supply petrol to two wheelers and four wheelers. Because of this the public suffered a lot on that day. I was one of the victims. When I approached a petrol outlet near Hopes College, it refused to supply me petrol and after pleading for nearly 10 minutes, I could get it for Rs.100. Other stations too did not give me fuel. People are already reeling under the fuel price hike and acts like these by the petrol outlets are adding insult to injury. Thiagarajan. B, Coimbatore.
