FACILITIES: A. Tamilarasi, Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, interacting with students after inaugurating the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Students’ Hostel at Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district on Monday. TIRUVARUR: Education assistance to the tune of Rs.2.56 crore had been given to 37,460 students in Tiruvarur district by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department during the academic year 2007-2008, said A.Tamilarasi, Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, at Savalakaran near Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district. She declared open Rs.10-lakh worth laboratory at Adi Dravidar High school at Savalakaran. She also declared open Rs.31.50-lakh worth (each) Adi Dravidar students’ hostel at Needamangalam and Poonthottam. She also distributed Rs.15.26 lakh worth of house site pattas to 14 Adi Dravidars. Free cycles were distributed to 3,975 Adi Dravidar students in the district at a cost of Rs.85.27 lakh. Free text books had been distributed to 4,241 students at a cost of Rs.4.31 lakh. She said that a girls’ hostel would be constructed for the high school at Savalakaran. Out of Rs.773 crore allotted for Adi Dravidar welfare, Rs.500 crores was spent for education. The pass percentage of the Adi Dravidar students was improved in both Tenth and Plus-Two examinations in the State, she said. U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, M. Chandrasekaran, Collector, participated.
