110 children with heart ailments identified

Udhagamandalam: The Chief Minister’s ‘Ilam Sirar Irudhaya Padhukappu Thittam’ was launched by the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, at a function organised by the Public Health Department here on Sunday.
In his inaugural address, the Minister said in a survey conducted as part of the scheme 110 children with congenital heart ailments had been identified in the district.
Stating that arrangements have been made to examine them with the help of experts, he said that those in need of surgery would be referred to the Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, the Kuppuswamy Naidu Hospital and the PSG Hospital in Coimbatore which have been approved by the Government. The scheme was being implemented in the State at a cost of Rs. 5 crore made available under the National Rural Health Scheme.
The Government has sanctioned Rs. 10 lakh as first instalment for the Nilgiris. He said the scheme will go on till the end of June.
The Collector in-charge, T. Abraham, who presided, said that by implementing such schemes the Government hoped to achieve its aim of creating a healthy society. It was the first of its kind in the country. The Udhagamandalam MLA, B. Gopalan, hoped that the medical authorities will relax hospital rules while dealing with accident victims.
