Ban smoking

The government has banned use of cell phones while driving as a good step to reduce road accidents. Similarly, smoking should be banned while driving.

This will not only help to save precious lives from road accidents but will also act as a step to reduce the habit among people possessing driving licence.

Will the Government take action?

Open emergency ward

Accidents are taking place frequently on the National Highway 49 Road near Paramakudi. In the month of May, five more accidents took place.

In this, nearly 10 were killed and more than 10 seriously injured.

In Paramakudi Government Hospital, there is no emergency ward and trauma care unit.

Due to non-availability of such facility, many precious lives were lost.

Will the authorities open a 24-hour service trauma care unit at Paramakudi GH with all facilities?

English language

With our SSLC students scoring 95, 96 and 98 out of 100 in English, how can we still label English a ‘foreign’ language? A student from Virudhunagar district has topped all and secured a stunning centum in it (The Hindu, May 31). Thus, it is clear we have enslaved English and mastered it far better than our own Tamil, for none has got 100 out of 100 in Tamil.

English is more native to our students than the native Tamil language. The Virudhunagar district student’s record deserves a place in the book of world records. His marvellous answer-paper needs to be shown as a model and circulated to all schools for reference and guidance. In our ‘unguided’ days, even the brightest student had to count himself lucky if he could manage 50 out of 100 in English, which was our bugbear and which our students have mastered so well, nay, tamed so effectively.

Remove telephone posts

After laying of the telephone lines underground, the telephone posts were abandoned as they were. They had not been taken back. Due to this lethargic attitude of the telephone staff, some miscreants misused them. A month back, two unscrupulous persons have tried to take away the post near my house, when I intercepted, they fled the scene. The higher officials of the telephone department were requested to make necessary arrangements to collect all such telephone posts and to take action against officials responsible for the dereliction of duty.

Welcome move

All these days when tickets are reserved, the railways used to mention only the time of departure of trains. Now, they have started mentioning the arrival time at the destination station of travellers in the tickets. It is really a welcome move.
