Open right turn

The closure of right turn at MGR Statue near District Court campus in the city puts all motorists to hardship. The turn was closed due an accident that killed a motorist. The closure will not avoid accidents. Many vehicles are passing in spite of the red signal. The turn may be allowed to reduce the traffic congestion.

Train needed

Nagore-Tiruvarur BG line is ready for traffic. I request the Railways to introduce Nagore-Chennai Express and Bangalore-Nagore Passenger that was announced in the budget. Since the main line BG conversion will be delayed further, trains 6775/6776 Nagore-Chennai Express and 571/572 Bangalore-Salem-Nagore passenger should be operated via Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Vriddhachalam till gauge conversion is completed .

Slippery tiles

It is nice that Tiruchi Junction is getting a facelift. But the floor tiles are slippery. If one is in a hurry , he is likely to slip. Necessary action may please be taken in this regard.

Reservation centre

We have been urging the Railways to open a computerised reservation centre at Tiruchi Town Railway Station. This facility will go a long way in helping senior citizens to confirm the ticket availability for all Tiruchi-bound trains.

Delayed inspection

It is sad that Tiruchi Railway Division has not taken the initiative for re-introducing regular train services in the Tiruvarur-Nagore section before the Nagore Dargah annual festival which falls on June 15. Conducting inspection of the 30-km-long new BG track would not have taken more than a day. The Railways had already run a trial train on this track in the last week of March. Tiruchi Division should explain the reason for the inordinate delay in the inspection.

Re-install ticket vending machine

The removal of the platform ticket vending machine from the VIP entrance at Tiruchi Railway Junction is causing hardship to the people. I request the Railways to re-install the machine.

Reduce tax on petrol

Following the Prime Minister’s advice, the Tamil Nadu Government has reduced 2 per cent sales tax on diesel. However, the VAT on petrol is charged as high as 35%, while all other products are charged at 12.5%. This is irrational. The tax rate is higher when compared to other states in India. In addition, whenever the price increase is announced, the State Governments were fetching more revenue. So the argument of revenue loss is false. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government should at least reduce 5% tax VAT on petrol so as to mitigate the sufferings of the public.

Thank you, SBI

When I went to State Bank of India’s Tennur branch on May 31, I was immensely pleased to see the automatic token issuing instrument reinstalled at the entrance. About 100 customers were watching the token number display board for the counter number which they should approach. The Chief General Manager of SBI has considered my request.

Child labour

I was shocked after visiting Ibrahim Park in the heart of Tiruchi to see around ten to twelve schoolgoing children working as waiters for the eatery cart. I have seen these children cleaning the plates and serving the visitors. I request the Labour Department to act fast to free the children.

Property tax

With spiralling prices of construction materials, labour and unaffordable land price, owning a dwelling place has become a dream for the middle class who are forced to live on rent. If the Corporation decides to go ahead with the proposed property tax revision, it will only result in owners taking up rents and higher cost of living adding up to fuelling inflation that is already over 8 per cent. It is most inappropriate to hike the property tax. The civic body is flush with money as per the annual report and a management expert is going to be employed to manage its finances. I appeal to the Corporation to withdraw the proposed hike .

Late supply of school books

During my school days in 1970’s , we used to get our textbooks almost a week before the school started. We would cover our books and be ready for the first day of school. Now children do not get all their textbooks even a week after the school re-opens. To add salt to injury, some books come out with errors and have to be withdrawn. This has become almost an annual feature. It creates a lot of confusion and uncertainty in the minds of the children, especially those who are in the X standard and will be appearing for their board exams. It is indeed an irony that the state, which boasts, of the highest literacy and centums rate in the country cannot provide the children their textbooks in time and without errors. David Peniel,

Confusing coin

Since five rupee notes are not durable, the Union Government came out with a five rupee coin weighing 9 grams. But of late, the government has come out with a five rupee coin which is just 6 grams in weight and lesser in size, resembling 50 paise coin. As a result, confusion is prevailing in transactions. Moreover, the five rupee coin is made of stainless steel metal facilitating the production of counterfeit coins . This will shatter the nation’s economy. So the government should stop minting the new coin.

Do not close post office

This refers to the dharna by postal staff about the merger of Srirangam West Post office with the Head Post office at Srirangam, much to the chagrin of the public. It is feared that it has been an easy way out for the department to close down post offices on some grounds. A year ago, the closure of Srinivasanagar P.O. situated in the middle of Srirangam town was averted by the intervention of the chief postmaster general of Tamil Nadu and the efforts of the local PMG. Now again, there are indications of its closure. It is learnt the owner of the building has conceded, in response to public appeal, for continuation of the P.O and taken payment of pending rent. Silent closure of a post officeis not undesirable. It is hoped that the Chief PMG and PMG will do their best in retaining this PO.

LPG as fuel

I took an auto from NSB Road to reach my home in Srirangam recently. The driver said that he uses domestic LPG to powering the auto and transfers the gas using a device available at a shop. He says he doubled his mileage by switching the fuel. Why not convert all autos and buses in our town to LPG as in New Delhi to make them economically viable and pollution free for commuters.
