KCR disbands party executive

HYDERABAD: In the wake of the debacle in the recent byelections, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao disbanded the party’s 150-strong executive committee of the party and all its district units.

He announced at a press conference after a marathon meeting of the executive on Wednesday that the demand for scrapping the State and district bodies came from the delegates themselves. As they had authorised him to take a decision, he was dissolving all the bodies.

The new executive, to be constituted within a week, would be smaller in size.

Mr. Rao, who himself resigned as party president but relented under pressure from the executive, also announced that that a policymaking body on the lines of a polit bureau would be constituted to guide the TRS’ activities. It would also include non-party members.

The TRS president disclosed that the executive had decided to take up a militant programme and a non-cooperation movement on certain issues. These would be primarily in the form of resistance to the administration. Asked to elaborate on the militancy he said its nature was being worked out.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao said the executive felt that the party must “independently” contest all the seats in the next general elections in Telangana. In tune with this decision, it was resolved to announce the names of candidates well in advance of the polls. Four or five candidates would be short-listed in each constituency and surveys conducted on their winning chances before finalising the nominee. The party would follow the norm of social justice in the selection of candidates.

Earlier, the party chief reportedly gave a dressing down to the delegates for the poor performance of the party in the byelections. He minced no words in asking leaders to quit the party if they were not interested.
