Air India beats Haryana Colts, enters final

NEW DELHI: Air India rode on half-centuries by Shafiq Khan (76, 74b) and Deepak Joon (61, 69b) to beat Haryana Colts by 25 runs and enter the final of the 35th all-India Goswami Ganesh Dutt memorial cricket tournament at the St. Stephen’s College ground here on Thursday.

The scores:

Air India 226 for eight in 40 overs (Shafiq Khan 76, Deepak Joon 61, J. Arun Kumar 40) bt Haryana Colts 201 in 38.2 overs (Vishal Saini 74).

Pankaj Thakur shines

Pankaj Thakur hit a half-century and then came up with a five-wicket haul to help Malviya Club beat Malik Sports by 13 runs in the first Lala Girdhari Lal Twenty20 cricket tournament at Bharat Nagar ground here on Thursday.

Thakur scored 56 as Malviya made 130 for eight in 20 overs. He then shone with the ball to return figures of five for eight as Malik Sports was dismissed for 117 in 18 overs. Manoj Lohiya scored 45 for Malik Sports.

In another match, L.B. Shastri Club defeated West Delhi Academy by seven wickets.

The scores:

Malviya Club 130 for eight in 20 overs (Pankaj Thakur 56) bt Malik Sports 117 in 18 overs (Manoj Lohiya 45, Pankaj Thakur five for eight).

West Delhi Academy 93 in 18 overs lost to L.B. Shastri Club 97 for three in 19 overs (Tapan Jain 42 n.o.).

Footballers honoured

Former footballers S.S. Hakim, Ranjit Thapa, Ram Narain, Girdhari Lal, Kewal Kaushik, Mohinder Pal and H.P.S. Dhillon were honoured at the release of the ‘Football Table Calendar’ at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.

The calendar, compiled by the Secretary of the Delhi Veteran Football Club, Hem Chand, was released to mark the ongoing Euro Cup.

On the occasion, an exhibition match was held between Delhi Sports Journalists and Veterans’ XI. It ended in a 1-1 draw.
