Chief Minister to inaugurate dairy village

KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the Milgram dairy village development project at Peermedu in Idukki district on Sunday.

The project, envisaging networking of 25,000 farmers and 250 milk collection centres, will include 50,000 highly productive cattle of foreign origin and located at Mlamala in the Vandiperiyar panchayat.

Kerala’s total milk production is only 20.63 lakh tonnes and contributes only 55 per cent of the total requirement. Rising production costs and unscientific procurement systems are more harmful to dairy farmers and its development.

The Milgram village development project is a hi-tech dairy project with the aim of increasing Kerala’s milk production, says Korah John, promoter of the Rs.500-crore project, which envisages production of 50,000 litres of milk in the first phase. — Special Correspondent
