The great similarity between the ancient Roman, Greek and other pre-Christian religions and Hindu religion and the great many parallels that existed between the pre-Christian religions and Hinduism both on the religious belief and their mythology was pointed out by Prof. J.B.S. Haldane, while delivering a lecture on pre-Christian religions and literature of Europe, under the auspices of the Indian Institute of World Culture, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on June 14. Prof. Haldane, at the outset, pointed out that the culture of ancient Greeks and Romans and their magnificent literature and religious practices still persisted in many European countries although the Greek and Roman Empires were things of the past. Although 1,500 years had elapsed, the Greek and Roman patterns of religions still persisted in parts of France and other European countries. The Druids, on the other hand, left very little by way of literature and much less by way of Art, for they never wrote down anything. With the emergence of Christianity, the art of writing came into vogue. The Islamic conquest of India had been complete and Hinduism hardly survived, but the Sanskrit classics continued to exist.
