India 13th in consumption

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Contrary to the belief that increase in fertilizers’ use is the root cause for the fertilizer shortage in the country, global statistics show that India is ranked a poor 13 in terms of “per hectare” use of fertilizers. This is despite the fact that India is the third biggest producer of fertilizers.

Citing a FAI publication (2005), All India Kisan Sabha General Secretary K. Varadarajan said that India consumed only 100 kg of fertilizers per hectare as against New Zealand which accounts for consumption of 569 kg a hectare.

Egypt consumed 438 kg, England 313 kg and Japan 291 kg.

Even Bangladesh and Pakistan which consumed 178 kg and 138 kg respectively per hectare are ranked above India.
