Petition against Gujjar agitation rejected

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a special leave petition challenging the Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan, which has since been called off.

A vacation Bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and G.S. Singhvi dismissed the petition at the admission stage.

Petitioner Lakhan Singh said that without going into the justness or otherwise of the Gujjars’ demands, no caste or community could be allowed to hold the State and other citizens to ransom through violence, disruption of examination schedule etc. Whatever be the perceived compulsions of competitive vote bank politics, the State could not allow a caste or community to take the law into their hands and cause enormous hardship and inconvenience to the public.

He said the High Court, by an interim order, restrained the Gujjars from resorting to strike. However, contrary to its directions, the Gujjar leaders resorted to road and rail roko from May 23.
