Accused in Dubey murder case escapes from custody

PATNA: An accused in the Satyendra Dubey murder case escaped from police custody when he was being produced before the Patna district sessions court on Monday.

Uday Chaudhary, one of the three accused, freed himself from the oversized handcuffs and re-enacted the escape he scripted in December 2006. Another accused Pinku Ravidas said he had dashed towards the Ganga river on the bank of which the court is located.

The third accused, Mantu Kumar, had earlier escaped in September 2005.

However, their misadventure lasted no more than a month as the police rearrested them. The two earlier incidents affected the speed of the trial process.

National Highway Authority of India engineer and IIT graduate, Satyendra Dubey, was murdered within a year of writing to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee listing the irregularities and corrupt practices in the Golden Quadrilateral project in November 2002.

Against his desire, his identity and the contents of the letter were leaked and he was shot dead in Gaya on November 27, 2003.
