Chennai: The eighth Sumeru Soft inter-schools cricket tournament (under-16), featuring eight teams, begins on June 30. The event, conducted under the auspices of Sridhar Cricket Club, is viewed as the platform for the school cricketers to make a mark and get themselves noticed. Outlining the features of the competition, R.I. Palani, Organising Secretary, said that eight invited schools would figure in the tournament in two divisions of four each. The top two in each pool meet in the semifinals. Palani said that the matches would be played on turf wickets. The final is likely to come off at the MAC Stadium. U. Prabhakar Rao, Vice-President, TNCA, underlined the role such events were playing in identifying new talent and wished the tournament to succeeded in its objective. K.V. Aiyappan of Sumeru Soft Private Ltd. pinpointed how cricket has become the unifying force. P.V. Srinivasan of Sridhar CC proposed a vote of thanks. Former Ranji Trophy stalwarts, M.G. Bavanarayanan and M. Srinivasan, will identify the talented boys for awarding scholarships. The teams: Group ‘A’: Santhome HSS (holder), Chettinad Vidyashram, Vidya Mandir (Mylapore), Jawahar Vidyalaya.
